TYPES OF RESTORATIVE DENTISTRY

Restorative dentistry treatments include all procedures used to repair your teeth after getting a cavity or when your teeth are worn or damaged. Most general dentists are trained in providing these treatments, which focus on keeping as much of the natural tooth as possible while still correcting any issues.

There are two main categories of restorative dentistry: direct and indirect.

DIRECT

A direct tooth restoration can be done in one visit to the dentist. The most common type is filling cavities, in which a resin composite is placed inside the tooth where the decay has been removed. There are a few filling options available depending on the severity of the cavity as well as the location.

INDIRECT

Indirect treatments can require multiple visits and procedures to fix the problem, as they need to be made in a lab in order to fit your mouth perfectly. This can include crowns, inlays and onlays. A crown covers the entire outer surface of the tooth to provide protection and support. An inlay is placed just within the cusps of the tooth. An onlay is placed on only a part of the tooth’s surface.
