What Is a Dental Crown?

Not many people realize that a crown is actually a type of dental prosthetic. While dentures are a type of removable prosthetic, a crown once placed is permanent. A crown is a cap that covers the entirety of an existing tooth or tooth implant and is cemented into place. Only a dentist can remove a crown once it is placed.
Before a crown can be placed on your tooth, your existing tooth needs to be reduced in order to make room for the capping material. Once that is done, your dentist will take an impression of your teeth in order to provide you with the perfect fit. Crowns are usually made of porcelain but can be made of other materials based on your needs and appearance preferences.
You will be given a temporary crown to protect your tooth while your permanent crown is being made.

Why Would I Need a Crown?

Crowns, or caps, are used for a variety of dental issues. They strengthen teeth that are damaged with chips or cracks or teeth that have had a root canal treatment and are more delicate than other teeth. Crowns are also used to improve the color, shape, alignment and general appearance of the tooth.
There are many reasons your dentist might decide to apply a crown to your teeth, depending on your specific needs and the state of your teeth. They can protect a tooth from fracture, create a secure anchor to attach a bridge, cover an implant and more.

How Long Do Crowns Last?

Crowns are made to last a lifetime, but lifestyle or oral hygiene habits can loosen crowns or cause them to fall out.

To ensure the life of your crown, don’t chew ice or other hard foods, wear a mouthguard when you are at risk of receiving impact damage to your mouth and make sure you practice good oral hygiene habits.
